"We want it for the contestants, and the contestants need it."
David Welty - JCSP Captain
The JCSP in Cleburne, Tx is busy making plans for the upcoming 2023 PRCA Rodeo. The 68th Annual JCSP PRCA Rodeo, held June 7th through 10th, will feature something new for the rodeo contestants.
Each nightly performance, in each PRCA Sanctioned event, contestants with the fastest time, or highest marked ride, will receive a $500 cash bonus following their event.
Not a check, not a money order, not an IOU, $500 in cold hard cash money.
The JCSP played with the idea during the 2022 Season in the team roping only, and it was welcomed among the ropers. Each team that was the fastest time of the night reported to the JAG Metals stage for their cash. ERS Gunite was the inaugural sponsor of the bonus.
“We saw the impact it made on our team roping last year, and the response from the ropers receiving the cash was very positive.” JCSP Captain, David Welty said.
“We also had sponsors come to us and ask how they could give cash like ERS Gunite did. We as a posse took that as a step in the right direction for the contestants in all events.” Welty said.
Each sponsor that donates the bonus will join the contestants on stage to pay out the $500 bonus. It gives a chance to the sponsor to meet the winners, and a prime time for the contestants to shake hands with donors.
David Welty also said “We are hoping this is something that grows. Now, contestants entered in one of the 4 performances only have to beat out 9 other people to win the bonus. That’s pretty good odds no matter how you look at it.
The JCSP has also decided to add equal added money across all their sanctioned rodeo events. This is a first in a long time to happen at the JCSP PRCA Rodeo.
“We knew it had to happen, but we had to figure out how to get it done. We think that all events matter, and all should have the same money added. It just took a few years to fix our sponsorship process and fill the bleachers to accumulate the extra costs of equal added money. It’s not just a simple wave of the wand to budget. But, we have set a goal to increase added money when we can across all events. We want it for the contestants, and the contestants need it.” stated Welty.
Contestants in the PRCA and WPRA will be arriving soon to Johnson County, and we can’t wait to see who makes their way to the stage each night.
Fast Facts:
- Equal Added Money in All PRCA and WPRA Events
- $500 to each contestant with high marked ride or fastest time in the performance in ALL events.
